Reading through this year’s Alumni Bursary applications was both inspiring and humbling. So many former Brantford students shared stories of growth, service, and determination, making the decision incredibly difficult. We were reminded of the strong values and bright potential carried by all our graduates.
After much consideration, we are honoured to present this year’s $500 Alumni Bursary to Simran Pooni. As a parent community, we created this bursary to recognize not just achievement, but character, and Simran embodies the values we hope Brantford helps instill: empathy, initiative, and a quiet strength that lifts others. Her future plans reflect a drive not just to succeed, but to serve, and that’s something we’re incredibly proud to support.
This bursary isn’t just about financial help. It’s a small way for our community to say, We see you. We believe in you. Go do great things.
Simran’s application, shown below, fulfilled all aspects of our application criteria and is accompanied by a wonderful reference letter from one of her teachers.
This fall, I’ll be attending the University of British Columbia to pursue a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science. I’m passionate about justice and public service, and my long-term goal is to work in criminal intelligence, helping reform systems and improve safety for all communities.

Brantford was where so much began for me. I still remember how comforting and connected the school felt—the buddy system gave me my first experience mentoring younger students, and it sparked a lifelong interest in helping others. In Grade 7 band, I discovered my love for music, which continued throughout high school in choir and jazz band. Most of all, Brantford instilled in me the importance of kindness, responsibility, and community—values that have shaped who I am.
In high school, I founded a Social Justice Club, organized fundraisers for global and local causes, and volunteered with children and youth in the community. Balancing academics, music, and service helped me grow as a leader and taught me to stay focused and adaptable, even when challenges arise. This bursary would help ease the financial pressure of starting university. I plan to use it toward textbooks and academic supplies so I can fully focus on this next chapter.
Being considered for this bursary is meaningful—it represents a full-circle moment from the place where my values and passions were first nurtured. Thank you for supporting Brantford alumni as we take our next steps forward.
