The Day of Action is still happening tomorrow (Friday, May 1, 2026) from 4-5 pm at the office of MLA Paul Choi.

While the Province has now announced it will provide up to $9.772 million to cover Burnaby’s unexpected salary arbitration costs, this last-minute funding only prevents what our DPAC Rep Morten aptly called a “Murder Budget.”

And yes, this funding came because families across Burnaby spoke up loudly and collectively. That advocacy mattered.

But this does not fix the real problem.

As outlined in the projected budget analysis prepared by Nicole Gladish, even with this shortfall covered, School District 41 remains in a structural deficit. The underlying issue of chronic underfunding of public education has not been addressed.

This announcement plugs the immediate leak, but the pipe is still broken.

Nothing about this changes the long-term outlook.

There is still no sustainable plan. No structural fix. No indication that districts like Burnaby will not be right back in this same position next year, facing impossible decisions with nothing left to cut except the people our kids rely on every day.

This is why the Day of Action is still on.

Tomorrow is about the bigger picture: stable, predictable, and adequate funding so our schools are not forced into crisis after crisis. We cannot keep coming back to patch the same problem with temporary fixes.

When the additional $9.4 million shortfall was revealed, parents mobilized. We showed the Province what Burnaby families can do when we stand together.

We cannot lose that momentum now.

If we stop pushing, nothing changes.
If we step back, we stay stuck.

Our children deserve better than a system that is constantly on the brink.
